International Crime - Policy and Engagement Branch

The International Crime – Policy and Engagement Branch (ICPEB) develops and implements legislative and policy proposals relevant to international crime cooperation, including the review of Australia’s international crime cooperation laws as part of the Extradition and Mutual Assistance Review.

ICPEB is responsible for the administration of Australia’s crime cooperation legislation including the Extradition Act 1988, the Mutual Assistance in Criminal Matters Act 1987 and the International Transfer of Prisoners Act 1997.

ICPEB also negotiates and implements bilateral and multilateral treaties on international crime cooperation matters, such as mutual assistance, extradition and the international transfer of prisoners, and is responsible for Australia’s implementation of a range of multilateral treaties that deal with transnational crime and corruption issues.

ICPEB leads Australia’s engagement in a number of multilateral forums aimed at combating transnational crime and corruption, such as the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organised Crime and the Conference of States Parties to the United Nations Convention against Corruption.

ICPEB also manages Australia’s financial obligations to the International Criminal Court and collaborates more broadly with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade to build and maintain Australia’s relationship with the Court.
